Many parents send me messages saying that their children live in the world of the moon, they forget very easily instructions they have just heard etc. I once received a message from a father who said more or less the following: “Carlos, one day I asked my son to go to the kitchen, get a glass, fill it with water and bring it to me. My son went to the kitchen, but came back without a glass of water, and asked me, ‘Father, what did you really ask me to do in the kitchen?’
Scenes like this are common in the daily lives of several families. What can we do to improve the children’s attention? What can we do to improve children’s memory? And above all, what can we do to exercise a very important skill in such cases, what is the sequencing ability ?
In the example I just mentioned, the father said what to his son? (1) Go to the kitchen, (2) get a glass, (3) fill the glass with water and (4) bring it to me. What happened: the child forgot about 3 of these commands and went to the kitchen, but came back without the glass of water. She needs to exercise the sequencing ability to keep that sequence of commands in the same order that she heard them.
I will go through some exercises to train this ability and exercise. The first exercise involves non-verbal sounds and the second verbal sounds.
In the first activity we should use sequences of nonverbal sounds , and for this you can use applications with animal sounds or musical instruments. I have here a toy, which I usually use, with animal sounds that can be played by touching the corresponding images. It is clear that first of all the child must associate the sound to each animal, to the respective source. Once the child has become accustomed to the sounds, you can go on to produce sequences of non-verbal sounds. The child should hear the sequence with their eyes closed or blindfolded, or with their backs to their father, and will have to say which sounds they heard in the same order in which they were produced.
Some parents might say, “Professor, I’m not going to buy a toy similar to the one you showed, let alone download an app on my cell phone. Can not I do this activity in my home using other resources? ” Well, of course. If you have musical instruments in your home, you can use them in order to produce sequences of non-verbal sounds such as wind instruments and percussion. However, if you do not have musical instruments, you can use toys such as teethers or rubber dolls.
Finally, let’s go to the second tip, the second activity today. It is a very simple activity in which your child will have to follow verbal instructions. You must construct verbal instructions and enter various commands and sequences of commands. Your child should run these commands in the same sequence, keeping the same order.
For example, you go to your child’s room and realize that various objects are lying on the floor. You say, “Son, take one object and make it jump over that other. Then get some object and put it inside that box. ” Your child then has to execute each command in that order. You can give several instructions with several commands, extending the number of commands according to your child’s ability.
